Reactions have trailed media personality Allwell Ene’s decision to shelve his planned birthday protest over the deplorable condition of Iwofe Road in Port Harcourt, with some supporters expressing disappointment over the move.
Ene, who describes himself as the “journalist for the poor,” had announced weeks earlier that he would stage a protest at a bad spot on Iwofe Road on his birthday to draw the government’s attention to the deplorable condition of the road and demand urgent repairs.
However, in a public notice issued on Friday, Ene said he had decided to shelve the protest following appeals from his wife, children and close friends.
“Based on pressure from my wife, children and close friends who have appealed that I shelve protesting on the Iwofe road tmrw as part of my birthday, I have decided to shelve it,” he stated.
The cancellation has generated mixed reactions, with some commenters criticising Ene for withdrawing from the planned demonstration.
Mike Iwezor advised Ene to reconsider his activism, saying, “You are Head of News now of a big radio station so activesim should take back seat….my mind.”
Another commenter, Sunday Miracle, expressed disappointment over the decision, describing Ene as the only hope for leading the protest.
“It’s okay, but remember that you were our only hope to lead pretest. Thank God you listen to your family,” he said.
Ilanye Chapp-Jumbo also criticised the decision, writing, “They dared you, and you shrunk.”
The planned protest had attracted support from residents who lamented the poor condition of Iwofe Road and called on the government to intervene.
The road, a busy route in Port Harcourt, has continued to draw complaints from residents and motorists over its condition, with calls for urgent rehabilitation.
