The University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) has refuted allegations circulating in a viral video about its services, insisting that essential medical equipment is available while admitting to challenges involving electricity supply and manpower.
In a statement issued on Thursday, October 29, 2026, the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Kem Daniel-Elebiga, and Head of the SERVICOM Unit, Mr. Efere Azubalu, said the Accident and Emergency Department had no record of the patient featured in the video.
The management also dismissed claims that the hospital lacked a sphygmomanometer, a device used to measure blood pressure, stressing that medical procedures are determined by qualified physicians.
On electricity supply, UPTH said power availability had improved through the efforts of its Chief Medical Director, Professor Chituru Godwill Orluwene, who facilitated the hospital’s inclusion in the Federal Government’s Energising Education Off-Grid Solar Project at the University of Port Harcourt.
However, it acknowledged that weather conditions and ongoing rehabilitation works could occasionally disrupt power supply, explaining that critical sections of the hospital were prioritised during such periods.
The hospital also admitted to staffing shortages, noting that the Federal Government was making efforts to recruit additional health workers. It said the recruitment process involved institutional verification and compliance with established procedures.
Reaffirming its commitment to quality healthcare delivery, training and research, the management urged journalists and members of the public to verify information and contact the hospital whenever concerns arise.
It assured the public of its willingness to respond to inquiries and maintain professional healthcare standards.
