The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has approved 66 out of 130 petitions challenging the final lists of Governorship and State Houses of Assembly candidates for the 2027 general election.
The commission disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC). following its review of complaints received after the publication of the final candidates’ lists on October 10.
According to INEC, the complaints bordered on the omission of political parties, wrongful inclusion of candidates whose names were not in their parties’ membership registers, and alleged multiple nominations.
The commission said some complaints were upheld, leading to the inclusion of affected candidates and political parties, while names wrongfully published were removed after verification.
It added that candidates whose nominations did not meet the applicable legal requirements were also removed.
INEC disclosed that it received 69 petitions from 12 political parties across 26 states concerning the governorship election, with 41 successful and 28 rejected.
For the State Houses of Assembly elections, the commission received 61 petitions from 11 political parties across 11 states. Of these, 25 were successful, while 36 were rejected.
