The Rivers State Police Command has commenced an investigation into allegations of unlawful detention and related misconduct contained in an online publication.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Grace Iringe-Koko Agabe, the Command said the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has directed an investigative panel to thoroughly examine the incident and establish the facts surrounding the allegations.
The Command stated that the decision reflects its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of fundamental human rights.
According to the statement, individuals directly affected by the incident, as well as members of the public with credible information, have been encouraged to come forward and assist the investigation. Such persons may visit the Office of the Police Public Relations Officer at the Rivers State Police Command or contact the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) through designated telephone lines.
The Commissioner of Police reiterated that detention beyond the period allowed by law without due process is unlawful and unacceptable, stressing that such practices will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
He further warned that any police officer found engaging in unethical or unlawful conduct would face strict disciplinary action in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Nigeria Police Act.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to accountability, transparency, respect for human dignity, and people-friendly policing in line with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
It added that safeguarding the rights, freedoms, and dignity of citizens remains a top priority.
