The Presidency has dismissed allegations by Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi that he is being targeted by the Federal Government, describing the claims as false and misleading.
Obi had, during a recent interview, accused the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government of targeting him, claiming he might not be alive to witness the 2027 general election.
Responding in a statement on Wednesday, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said Obi was attempting to drag the government into what he described as personal inconveniences, including an incident involving his vehicle at an airport, which he suggested stemmed from a violation of parking regulations.
The Presidency also rejected Obi’s claims that his life could be in danger ahead of the 2027 general election and that people were being pressured not to invite him to social events. It said the allegations were fabricated to attract public sympathy and divert attention from what it described as credibility issues surrounding Obi, his support movement, and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The statement further dismissed suggestions that the government was targeting Fidelity Bank, noting that Obi has a substantial interest in the financial institution and insisting that the bank has continued to perform strongly under the current administration’s economic reforms.
The Presidency maintained that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains focused on implementing its reform agenda and has no interest in being distracted by Obi’s allegations.
“The Tinubu government remains fully focused on consolidating its historic and beneficial reforms for the good of all Nigerians. It has neither the time nor the inclination to be distracted by Mr Obi’s self-serving narratives and lies or by his candidacy, as he constantly diminishes himself with specious, unverifiable utterances,” the statement said.
