Former Rivers State Governor, Celestine Omehia has urged the National Assembly to avoid rushing the proposed State Police Bill into law, warning that it could have serious implications for Nigeria’s democracy.
Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday, Omehia argued that establishing state police across the country’s 36 states and 774 local government areas could threaten democratic governance.
He expressed concern that state-controlled police forces could be exploited by dominant ethnic groups to intimidate and suppress minority communities, potentially deepening ethnic tensions and undermining national unity.
