Lagos State recorded the highest number of newly tested HIV-positive patients in Nigeria between March and May 2026, according to data from the National Data Repository.
The figures show that Lagos recorded 1,949 new HIV-positive cases during the three-month period, followed by Akwa Ibom with 1,542 cases and Benue with 1,442 cases. Anambra and Rivers States completed the top five with 1,331 and 1,112 cases respectively.
Other states with significant numbers of newly identified HIV-positive patients include Delta (753), Kaduna (725), Ogun (719), Oyo (710), and the Federal Capital Territory (639). Kano, Nasarawa, Taraba, Plateau, and Imo also recorded over 500 cases each during the period.
At the lower end of the ranking, Yobe recorded 114 cases, while Ekiti reported 134 and Sokoto 152. Katsina, Jigawa, Gombe, and Zamfara also recorded relatively lower numbers compared to other states.
The data highlights the continued need for expanded HIV testing, prevention, and treatment programmes across the country as health authorities work toward reducing new infections and improving access to care. Nigeria’s HIV surveillance and treatment data are monitored through the National Data Repository, a central database that supports HIV programme management and epidemic monitoring.
