The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted the public to the circulation of a suspected counterfeit toothpaste, ORACIRE+ Toothpaste, allegedly being distributed in Nigeria under the guise of the registered ORACARE+ Toothpaste.
The agency issued the warning in its Public Alert No. 041/2026, following a formal complaint and market intelligence report on the widespread distribution of the suspected counterfeit product.
According to NAFDAC, market surveillance conducted at Ojuwoye Market in Mushin, Lagos, revealed that the suspected counterfeit closely resembles the registered ORACARE+ Toothpaste in packaging design and overall presentation.
The agency said the similarity makes it difficult for consumers to distinguish the suspected counterfeit product from the registered toothpaste.
NAFDAC warned that counterfeit personal care products may not meet established quality and safety standards and could pose health risks to consumers.
It added that the origin, composition, safety and quality of the suspected counterfeit ORACIRE+ Toothpaste have not been verified.
The agency said it has commenced surveillance activities, while all zonal directors and state coordinators have been directed to investigate the availability and distribution of the suspected counterfeit product and take appropriate regulatory action.
NAFDAC advised consumers, distributors, retailers and healthcare providers to exercise caution when purchasing ORACARE+ Toothpaste.
It urged the public to buy toothpaste products only from reputable and authorised outlets, and to carefully examine product packaging and the source of supply before making purchases.
Consumers and healthcare providers who suspect the sale or distribution of the counterfeit product are advised to report to the nearest NAFDAC office, call 0800-162-3322, email sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng, or use the Med Safety App available on Android and iOS devices.
