The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has urged Voter Education Desk Officers to adopt modern communication strategies across traditional, digital and grassroots platforms to boost voter participation and combat misinformation.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Rivers State, Dr Johnson Alalibo Sinikiem, made the call on Monday during the official opening of a one-day capacity-building workshop for Voter Education Desk Officers in Port Harcourt.
The workshop brought together Voter Education Desk Officers from four South-South states — Edo, Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers.
Sinikiem charged the officers to deploy dynamic and proactive messaging to tackle voter apathy, counter fake news and neutralise election-related disinformation.
He also urged them to strengthen voter education and outreach among underrepresented groups, particularly women, youths and Persons with Disabilities.
The REC tasked the officers with serving as frontline ambassadors in safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process through accurate and timely information.
He reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to providing the necessary logistics, materials and administrative support to ensure seamless field operations.
