The Rivers State House of Assembly has invited the Vice Chancellor of PAMO University of Medical Sciences and officials of the State Ministry of Education to appear before its Adhoc Committee investigating scholarship funds allocated to the institution.
The invitation was disclosed on Monday during the 44th Legislative Sitting of the House, where the Adhoc Committee presented its preliminary report on the investigation.
Presenting the report, Chairman of the Committee, Rt. Hon. Dumle Maol, said invitation letters had been sent to the Vice Chancellor, the Ministry of Education and other relevant parties to appear before the committee.
Maol said the committee had complied with the provisions of Sections 128 and 129 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, as well as other relevant laws, and was awaiting the appearance of those invited.
Commenting on the report, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, urged the committee to take the assignment seriously and ensure that all parties were given fair hearing during the inquiry.
Amaewhule noted that the House had the constitutional authority to summon individuals to give evidence and produce documents necessary for its investigation in the interest of the people of Rivers State.
The House had earlier, acting on the recommendation of its Appropriation Committee, removed the N6 billion proposed as scholarship grant to PAMO University of Medical Sciences from the 2026 Appropriation Law.
It subsequently constituted the Adhoc Committee to investigate the amount of funds disbursed to the university since its establishment and determine how the funds had been utilised.
