The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Rivers State on Tuesday convened a Senatorial District Stakeholders’ Meeting in Bori, Khana Local Government Area, as part of preparations for the Rivers South-East Senatorial District bye-election scheduled for June 20, 2026.
Speaking at the meeting, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Rivers State, Dr. Johnson Alalibo Sinikiem, reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to conducting a free, fair, credible and transparent election.
He stressed the need for collaboration among political parties, security agencies, civil society groups and other key stakeholders, urging them to support the commission in ensuring a peaceful and successful electoral process.
Dr. Sinikiem disclosed that the bye-election will be conducted in 1,629 polling units spread across 88 registration areas and wards within the senatorial district.
According to him, the Rivers South-East Senatorial District comprises seven local government areas: Andoni, Eleme, Gokana, Khana, Opobo/Nkoro, Oyigbo and Tai.
The REC assured stakeholders that INEC was fully prepared for the exercise and would take all necessary measures to ensure that the outcome of the election reflects the will of the people.
The stakeholders’ engagement forms part of the commission’s efforts to deepen electoral transparency and foster confidence among participants ahead of the poll.
