The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, on Tuesday, convened an emergency conference with senior strategic managers of the Nigeria Police Force at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, where he announced far-reaching reforms aimed at strengthening national security operations and accountability within the Force.
The meeting, had members of the Force Management Team, Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, and Commissioners of Police in attendance.
DCP Anthony Okon Placid, Force Public Relations Officer in a statement said, the meeting was convened to review emerging security challenges and issue new operational directives to Police Commands and Formations nationwide.
IGP Disu stressed the importance of discipline, transparency, and leadership responsibility across all levels of command, noting that the current security situation requires a more intelligence-driven and accountable policing system.
He also addressed the recent extra-judicial killing incident in Delta State, describing it as unlawful and unacceptable. The IGP confirmed that the officers involved have been dismissed from service and that the case has been handed over for criminal prosecution, reiterating that no officer is above the law.
Providing operational updates for April 2026, the police chief disclosed that intelligence-led operations across the country led to the arrest of 28 suspected terrorists, 51 murder suspects, 62 armed robbery suspects, 85 kidnapping suspects, and 54 suspected cultists. He added that 189 kidnapped victims were rescued, while 140 firearms, 1,074 rounds of ammunition, and 37 stolen vehicles were recovered.
He said, as part of key structural reforms, the IGP announced the establishment of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), a specialised tactical formation designed to improve rapid response to violent crimes.
He explained that the unit will operate strictly on intelligence-based deployment, with enhanced training, human rights compliance measures, and strict oversight by Commissioners of Police.
He further directed all Commissioners of Police to strengthen community policing through regular town hall meetings with traditional rulers, religious leaders, and other stakeholders, as well as ensure their contact details are made accessible to improve communication and public trust.
IGP Disu reaffirmed that the ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Police Force are anchored on professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights, supported by complaint channels such as the Police Complaints Response Unit (CRU).
