The Federal Government has announced that the planned closure of the Eko Bridge in Lagos State will no longer proceed as earlier scheduled.
Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, disclosed this during an inspection of the bridge, explaining that the decision followed concerns raised by President Bola Tinubu over the potential hardship the closure could cause Nigerians.
According to Umahi, the President directed the ministry to reassess the earlier decision to shut down the bridge.
“We directed that this bridge be closed about two weeks ago, but our caring President, Bola Tinubu, is concerned about the impact the closure would have on Nigerians. He asked me to return and review the decision to avoid unnecessary hardship,” he said.
The minister revealed that engineers conducted another technical evaluation of the bridge on Monday and concluded that the structure remains safe for use for now.
He added that while the closure has been suspended, the government would continue to prioritise the safety of commuters and ensure that no Nigerian is exposed to danger while using the bridge.
Umahi noted that authorities had agreed on three procedures aimed at maintaining the bridge and guaranteeing public safety.
