One of the police officers allegedly involved in the killing of 22-year-old Anthony Obodo in Rivers State, Inspector Solomon Nwogu, is still at large, the state Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has disclosed.
Adepoju made this known during a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, while providing an update on the investigation into the incident.
According to the Commissioner, Nwogu allegedly absconded after the incident, while three other members of the patrol team were arrested and detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Port Harcourt.
Adepoju said the incident occurred when Corporal Alfred Louis, who was attached to the patrol team, opened fire at the vehicle in which Obodo was travelling.
He said a bullet struck Obodo, identified as the driver, leaving him with a gunshot injury.
The victim was immediately rushed to Palmer’s Hospital in Port Harcourt, where he received medical attention but was subsequently pronounced dead by the doctor on duty.
The Commissioner stared that efforts were intensified to locate and arrest Inspector Nwogu, who reportedly fled after the incident.
He said the officers had been tried in an orderly room proceeding, with the officer at large also recommended for dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force.
The Commissioner added that the affected officers would subsequently be charged to court to face appropriate criminal charges in accordance with the law.
