The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has advised newly appointed judges of the lower courts to reject unsolicited gifts and avoid extravagant birthday celebrations, warning that such actions could trigger petitions and erode public trust in the judiciary.
Speaking at the opening of an induction programme for newly appointed judges on Tuesday, the CJN, represented by Babatunde Adejumo, urged the judges to uphold integrity and ensure the prompt and impartial dispensation of justice.
She stressed that judges must not accept unsolicited gifts, noting that social events such as birthday celebrations could provide opportunities for individuals to offer gifts capable of compromising their integrity or attracting allegations of misconduct.
Justice Adejumo congratulated the judges on their appointments, describing the role as a weighty responsibility that requires commitment to the rule of law and improved access to justice.
He explained that the induction course was designed to equip the new judges with a deeper understanding of judicial ethics, courtroom administration, and the practical application of substantive and procedural laws as they begin their judicial duties.
