A civil society organisation in Rivers State, Defense for Human Rights and Democracy (DHRD), has condemned what it described as the continued attacks and insults directed at former senator, Magnus Ngei Abe, by some individuals and groups in Ogoni over his political views and opinions.
In a press release signed by its Chairman, Christopher Clifford Solomon, the group described Senator Abe as a respected elder statesman who has served Rivers State and Nigeria in various elective and appointive positions with distinction, integrity, and dedication.
According to the group, Abe’s contributions to public service and democratic development are widely recognised beyond Ogoni land, stressing that he has the constitutional right to express his political views without being subjected to abuse, insults, or character attacks.
The organisation also expressed concern that critics of the former lawmaker had focused on attacking his personality rather than challenging the facts contained in his recent political narrative.
“It is even more shocking and surprising when no one has come out to challenge the facts of the senator’s narrative,” the statement said.
DHRD reminded political actors and activists that politics should remain a democratic contest of ideas and not a platform for hostility and personal attacks.
The group urged stakeholders within and outside Ogoni to embrace political tolerance, respect divergent opinions, and promote peaceful engagement in the interest of unity and progress.
It further warned against the unwarranted maligning of prominent Rivers indigenes because of political disagreements, insisting that such actions undermine democratic values and social cohesion.
The organisation called on all parties involved to uphold civility, mutual respect, and tolerance in political discourse across the state.
