Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Tinubu to provide Nigerians with clear explanations over unresolved questions surrounding his past, including issues relating to his educational records.
Obi made the call in a statement shared on his official social media platform on Monday, August 31, 2026, following reports of legal proceedings involving the release of records concerning the President’s background.
The former Anambra State governor said it was concerning that a sitting president would seek to prevent records relating to his past from being disclosed by a foreign court when such information is of legitimate public interest.
According to Obi, public officials, particularly those occupying the highest office in the country, should be willing to confront questions about their history openly rather than rely on prolonged litigation to keep such records away from public scrutiny.
He questioned why basic educational records, including primary and secondary school credentials, had remained subjects of controversy and legal disputes.
Obi maintained that Nigerians were entitled to “clear, credible, and verifiable explanations” on the issues, particularly where the documents in question had previously been presented to public institutions.
He said having an imperfect past was part of the human experience, but stressed that what mattered was the willingness to confront such issues with honesty, humility and a readiness to make amends where necessary.
“An imperfect past is part of the human condition. What matters is the willingness to confront it with humility, honesty and deep apology, to make amends where necessary and, when circumstances so demand, to place the interests of the nation above personal ambition,” Obi said.
