In a move aimed at nurturing leadership skills among young people, the Chairman of Bonny Local Government Area, Hon. Abinye Blessing Pepple, temporarily handed over the reins of the council to an eight-year-old pupil, Miss Success Edmond Fombo, who served as the One-Day Chairman of the local government.
Miss Fombo, a pupil of Tamvina International School, Bonny, was formally received at the council headquarters by Chairman Pepple, alongside members of her Child Executive Council and teachers from the school on Tuesday
During her 24-hour tenure, the young chairman assumed key leadership responsibilities, including presiding over an emergency Executive Council meeting attended by council supervisors and senior government officials.
At the meeting, she received briefings on the operations, responsibilities, and ongoing programmes of various departments within the local government. She also addressed members of the Executive Council, engaged officials on issues affecting children and community development, and embarked on an inspection tour of ongoing projects across Bonny LGA.
As part of her recommendations, Miss Fombo advocated the appointment of a Senior Special Adviser on Child Welfare and Protection Matters. She also called for the establishment of a Child Welfare and Protection Committee (CWPC) in Bonny Local Government Area to strengthen policies and initiatives aimed at safeguarding children.
A major highlight of the event was a community service project executed by the 2026 graduating class of Tamvina International School, showcasing the students’ commitment to community development and responsible citizenship.
The initiative, according to the Bonny Local Government Council, was designed to inspire the next generation of leaders and encourage active participation of young people in governance and community development.
