Rivers State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Peters Nwagor, has inaugurated the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE) Centre for Artificial Intelligence (IACAI), describing it as a strategic step towards preparing students for the future of education and technology.
Nwagor, represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Mina Tele Ikuru, spoke on Tuesday during the inauguration at the university’s main auditorium.
He said the centre would promote AI-driven research, personalised learning, data analytics and digital administration, while stressing that AI should complement, not replace, teachers.
“AI must assist the teacher, not replace the teacher,” he said.
The commissioner also launched a book documenting IAUE’s 10-year journey in information technology, automation and digitisation, commending the university for its progress from manual to digital systems.
IAUE Pro-Chancellor, Chief Chinyere Emmanuel Igwe, said the centre would help expand personalised learning and equip graduates with AI skills.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Okechuku Onuchuku, noted that AI was already transforming sectors including education, healthcare, agriculture, finance, transportation and manufacturing.
