The Benue State Government has denied any involvement in the reported attack on the convoy of former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate Peter Obi by youths in the state on Tuesday.
The government said it was unaware of Obi’s visit to Benue and therefore could not have been responsible for the incident.
The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Kula Tersoo, told Punch that Obi, as a former governor and presidential candidate, should have been provided adequate security by federal and host-state security agencies.
Tersoo expressed surprise that youths were able to stop Obi’s convoy, stressing that no youth group was acting on behalf of the state government.
He added that the government did not consider Obi a threat to Governor Hyacinth Alia and reiterated that it had no prior knowledge of his visit.
Obi was reportedly on his way to Yelewata to visit families of victims of the June 2025 massacre when his convoy was stopped by youths at Gyado Villa along the Gboko Road.
Following the incident, Obi reportedly returned to Abuja.
