The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has urged traditional rulers to mobilise eligible voters and promote peaceful, issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 General Election.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash O. Amupitan, SAN, made the call on Tuesday during a visit to the Oba of Lagos, Oba Riliwanu Akiolu, at the Iga Idunganran Palace.
Amupitan announced that the Presidential and National Assembly elections will hold on January 16, 2027, while the Governorship and State Assembly elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027.
He urged traditional rulers to encourage citizens to register, collect their PVCs and participate actively in the elections, stressing that “technology alone cannot build a democracy; people do.”
The INEC chairman also called for campaigns focused on policies rather than personalities, warning against hate speech, character assassination and inflammatory rhetoric.
Responding, Oba Akiolu urged INEC officials to remain honest and impartial, while appealing to the Federal Government to provide adequate and timely funding for the 2027 elections.
