Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has expressed concern over the growing hardship faced by Nigerians living abroad, revealing that many citizens experiencing xenophobic attacks in South Africa still prefer to remain there rather than return home.
Obi made the remarks during a dinner organised for NDC aspirants in Abuja on Monday, shortly after returning from South Africa.
The development was contained in a statement released on Tuesday by the NDC media team.
According to Obi, attempts were made to assist distressed Nigerians in South Africa to return home, but many declined the offer, insisting that living conditions in Nigeria were more difficult.
“I just came back last night from South Africa. You know what Nigerians are going through in South Africa and so many other African countries,” he said.
Obi noted that he addressed Nigerians during the visit and told them that if Nigeria was functioning properly, many citizens would not be forced to seek opportunities abroad.
He added that despite arrangements made to support their return, several Nigerians insisted they would rather remain in South Africa than come back to Nigeria, describing the situation at home as worse.
