Political analyst, Darlington Nwaigwe, has described politics in Rivers State as a game that has never been for the faint-hearted, following the events that unfolded in the state on Saturday, September 5, 2026.
Nwaigwe made the observation after former Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, attended the funeral of his late mother in Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area, while former Governor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, held a reception ceremony at Imaegbu, also in Ikwerre LGA, on the same day.
In a statement reflecting on the development, Nwaigwe questioned whether the timing and proximity of the two events were coincidental or part of a broader political strategy.
He said the development had once again given political watchers something to discuss, particularly against the backdrop of the longstanding rivalry between Wike and Amaechi.
According to him, the events highlighted the intensity of political competition in Rivers State, where alliances can produce powerful friendships while disagreements can create equally strong rivalries.
Nwaigwe, however, said that beyond the political calculations, ceremonies and displays of political strength, the interests of Rivers people should remain paramount.
He identified peace, good governance, development, opportunities and a better future as the major expectations of residents of the state.
“Political rivalry may be inevitable in a democracy. But Rivers State must always come first,” he said.
Nwaigwe added that both Wike and Amaechi would remain important figures in the political history of Rivers State, but stressed that neither politician was bigger than the state.
“Let the politicians play their chess. But let Rivers people ultimately decide who deserves their confidence,” he said.
