The Interim National Chairperson of the Labour Party, Nenadi Usman, has stated that it may be too late for the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to rejoin the party.
Usman made the remarks on Wednesday during an appearance on Prime Time on Arise Television. She explained that the party would close its membership register 21 days before its primaries, in line with provisions of the Electoral Act, after which no new registrations would be accepted.
According to her, once the register is closed and the electronic register submitted, there would be no opportunity for late entry into the party. She stressed that it would therefore be difficult for Obi to return after that process is completed.
Despite this, Usman acknowledged Obi’s significant impact during the 2023 elections, noting that he elevated the party’s profile and attracted widespread support. She added that his message of equity and fairness drew many individuals, including herself, into the Labour Party.
