The Federal Government has confirmed the passing of Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, who died at the age of 50.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced his death in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa. According to the ministry, Lele passed away in the early hours of April 19, 2026, in Ankara after a prolonged illness.
Describing him as a committed and distinguished officer, the ministry noted that until his death, Lele served as Director in charge of the Middle East and Gulf Division. A career diplomat, he was recently appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as ambassador-designate to Algeria, following his confirmation by the Nigerian Senate.
Born in Gamawa, Bauchi State, in 1976, Lele studied Economics at Bayero University Kano and held diplomatic postings in Berlin, Lomé, and Riyadh.
The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, who received his remains at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, described him as a hardworking and humble officer whose contributions will be greatly missed.
The ministry added that his death represents a significant loss to his family, the Foreign Service, and the nation at large. He was laid to rest in Kano on Wednesday in accordance with Islamic rites.
