Senator Tony Nwoye of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been named the new Senate Minority Leader following a series of defections that reshaped the balance of power in the upper legislative chamber.
Nwoye, who represents Anambra North Senatorial District, received unanimous backing from the minority caucus after the departure of prominent opposition members created a leadership gap. His appointment is seen as a move by remaining opposition lawmakers to restore cohesion and steady their ranks under mounting political pressure.
he leadership shift comes in the wake of Senator Osita Ngwu’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), further weakening the opposition’s presence in the Senate.
Ngwu, in a resignation letter read on the floor by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, attributed his decision to political alignment with both the Enugu State leadership and the federal government.
