ESOCS Devotional 9 July 2026 – The Gospel Begins With Jesus
MEMORY VERSE: “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” Mark 1:1 NKJV
TEXT: MARK 1:1-13
The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 2 As it is written in the Prophets:
“Behold, I send My messenger before Your face,
Who will prepare Your way before You.”
3 “The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord;
Make His paths straight.’ ”
4 John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. 5 Then all the land of Judea, and those from Jerusalem, went out to him and were all baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.
6 Now John was clothed with camel’s hair and with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 And he preached, saying, “There comes One after me who is mightier than I, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to stoop down and loose. 8 I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
9 It came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove. 11 Then a voice came from heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
12 Immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness. 13 And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to Him.

Mark opens his Gospel account with a bold and clear statement: “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” With these few words, he sets the foundation for everything that follows. The gospel, the good news, does not begin with us, our needs, our sin, or even our salvation. It begins with Jesus.
In a world that often places man at the center of every message, Mark reminds us that the gospel story starts with Christ at the center. He is the author, the focus, and the fulfillment of the good news. Before we ever reached out to God, He came to us, in the person of Jesus.
Jesus is not just a part of the gospel; He is the gospel. His birth, life, teachings, miracles, death, and resurrection are the very substance of God’s message to the world. Without Jesus, there is no gospel. Without Jesus, there is no hope, no forgiveness, and no eternal life.
By starting his account with Jesus, Mark also shows us that the gospel is not just a message to be believed, but a person to be followed. Jesus came not only to save us, but to lead us into a new way of life, a life centred on Him.
So when we think about the gospel, let’s not begin with our problems or needs. Let’s begin with the One who loved us first. Let’s fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).
Reflections
- Is Jesus truly the centre of your understanding of the gospel?
- Do you follow the gospel as a message or as a relationship with a living Saviour?
- How can you grow in your daily walk with Jesus?
Action Step
Read the Gospels (starting with Mark) to grow in your knowledge of Jesus. Focus your prayers on knowing Jesus personally, not just asking for things. Share the gospel by pointing others directly to Jesus, not religion or rules.
Prayer
- Lord Jesus, thank you for being the beginning and the centre of the gospel.
- Help me to know you more deeply, follow you more closely, and reflect you more clearly.
- May my life always start and end with you, in your name. Amen.
