ESOCS Devotional 8 July 2026 – Conviction Leads to Confession
MEMORY VERSE: “Woe to me! …. I am a man of unclean lips… ” Isaiah 6:5 NIV
TEXT: ISAIAH 6:1-8
In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. 2 Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one cried to another and said:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
The whole earth is full of His glory!”
4 And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke.
5 So I said:
“Woe is me, for I am undone!
Because I am a man of unclean lips,
And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips;
For my eyes have seen the King,
The Lord of hosts.”
6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a live coal which he had taken with the tongs from the altar. 7 And he touched my mouth with it, and said:
“Behold, this has touched your lips;
Your iniquity is taken away,
And your sin purged.”
8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying:
“Whom shall I send,
And who will go for Us?”
Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”

When Isaiah saw the Lord seated on His throne, high and lifted up, he was immediately overwhelmed, not by pride or excitement, but by conviction. He cried out, “Woe is me!… I am a man of unclean lips.”
Being in the presence of God exposes our true condition. Isaiah, a prophet, a man who used his lips to speak for God, suddenly realized his deep need for cleansing. Why? Because when we see the holiness of God, we also see our brokenness.
This isn’t to shame or condemn us, but to transform us. God doesn’t reveal our sin to destroy us; He reveals it so He can redeem and purify us. Isaiah’s confession led to a touch from the altar (verse 6), a symbol of cleansing and renewal.
There is power in honest confession. Isaiah didn’t hide, deny, or justify his sin. He acknowledged it openly, and God responded with mercy. The result? Isaiah was not only cleansed, he was commissioned. His encounter with God led to a new purpose: “Here am I. Send me!” (Isaiah 6:8).
We all have “unclean lips” things we’ve said, thought, or done that fall short of God’s glory. But God is not finished with us. When we come to Him in humility, He restores, renews, and sends us out to serve Him with clean hearts and purified lips.
Reflections
- When was the last time you allowed God’s presence to confront your heart honestly?
- Are there areas in your life where God is calling you to confess and be cleansed?
- How can you respond to God’s holiness with humility and surrender?
Action Step
Spend time in quiet reflection, asking God to reveal anything that needs confession. Confess and receive forgiveness, don’t carry shame longer than you should. Say “yes” to God’s call, even if it stretches your comfort zone.
Prayer
- Holy God, I come before you just as I am. Like Isaiah, I confess that I am a person of unclean lips. Cleanse me with your mercy and purify my heart.
- Help me to respond to your call with a willing spirit, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
