ESOCS Devotional 7 July 2026 – Known Before Birth
MEMORY VERSE: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”– Jeremiah 1:5 NKJV
TEXT: JEREMIAH 1:4-10
Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying:
5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you;
Before you were born I sanctified you;
I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”
6 Then said I:
“Ah, Lord God!
Behold, I cannot speak, for I am a youth.”
7 But the Lord said to me:
“Do not say, ‘I am a youth,’
For you shall go to all to whom I send you,
And whatever I command you, you shall speak.
8 Do not be afraid of their faces,
For I am with you to deliver you,” says the Lord.
9 Then the Lord put forth His hand and touched my mouth, and the Lord said to me:
“Behold, I have put My words in your mouth.
10 See, I have this day set you over the nations and over the kingdoms,
To root out and to pull down,
To destroy and to throw down,
To build and to plant.”

Jeremiah 1:5 gives us a profound glimpse into God’s intimate knowledge of us, even before we were born. God speaks to Jeremiah and reveals that his purpose and identity were not random or accidental. Long before his birth, God had known, set apart, and appointed him for a specific assignment. This truth applies to us as well. You are not an afterthought. You were known by God before you ever took your first breath. Your life, personality, and purpose are not products of chance; they are the result of divine intention.
God’s knowledge of us is complete. He knows our strengths and weaknesses, our past and future, our fears and dreams. And despite all that, He still calls us. His calling is not based on our qualifications but on His sovereign choice and grace. Like Jeremiah, you may feel unworthy, too young, too broken, or too ordinary. But God says, “I knew you; I formed you, I chose you.”
Understanding that we were known before birth should bring confidence and clarity. You are not trying to earn God’s approval; you’re living out what He already placed inside you. When the enemy tries to whisper that you’re not good enough, remember: your identity and calling were established before time began. So, stop comparing, stop doubting, and start walking in the assurance that your life matters. God has a purpose that only you can fulfil.
Reflections
- Do you believe that God intentionally created and called you?
- What lies or doubts have kept you from embracing your identity in Christ?
- How can you begin to live more confidently in your God-given purpose?
Action Step
Affirm your identity daily by declaring Jeremiah 1:5 over your life. Write down the gifts, passions, and desires God has placed in you. Take a step toward your calling, serve, study, or mentor someone.
Prayer
- Father, thank you for knowing me before I was even born.
- Help me to walk boldly in the purpose you designed for me.
- Remove fear and doubt, and let me live with confidence in your plan, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
