ESOCS Devotional 7 May 2026 – Serving: Commendable Road to Greatness
MEMORY VERSE: “Behold, My Servant will deal wisely, He will be exalted and extolled, and be very high.”Isaiah 52:13 IKJV
TEXT: ISAIAH 52:13-53
Behold, My Servant shall deal prudently;
He shall be exalted and extolled and be very high.
14 Just as many were astonished at you,
So His visage was marred more than any man,
And His form more than the sons of men;
15 So shall He sprinkle many nations.
Kings shall shut their mouths at Him;
For what had not been told them they shall see,
And what they had not heard they shall consider.

Our text today exposes the fact that being a servant implies being submissive to a master’s will. The Old Testament Bible is filled with references to service and servant-hood. Prominent among those passages are found in Isaiah’s prophecies, including: Isaiah 42:1-4, 49:1-6; 50:4-9; 52; 13-53. Clearly, these prophetic messages were partially fulfilled in the Israel nation, and completely in the person of Jesus Christ. Christ’s response to His divine mission suggests that serving is heaven’s approved way to greatness, for His Name is exalted above all names (Philippians 2:9). He was humble and walked the path of obedience all the way to death.
Jesus Christ’s attitude to service and servant-hood turned the value of His day upside down. He was obedient to His Father’s will all through His entire life and ministry. His death paid the price for us, freeing us to give total obedience to the loving Father of all. The Lord and Master wants us to serve Him by serving others. This is in recognition of the fact that whatever we do for one of God’s children, we do for Him, (Matthew 25:31-45). In our service to God and mankind, we are therefore admonished to have the same humble, gentle, submissive, and giving attitude that characterized the conduct of Jesus Christ. He is our role model of all times.
Reflections
- Humility should be the hallmark of Christian service. Do you agree?
Prayer
- Lord Jesus, teach me to be as humble as you were.
