TEXT: MARK 14:66-72
MEMORY VERSE: Blessed be God! The Lord Jesus offered the one supreme sacrifice for sin for all time. And by His one sacrifice, He perfected us
There is no one among us who has not in one way or the other denied the Lord by commission and omission. In our text today, we see Peter’s denial of the Lord exposed.
There is always with men the urge to deny the truth in order to escape danger or guilt. It is in the nature of humans. Though Peter knew Jesus, and was the Chief among close confidants of the Lord, he could not own up that truth for the fear of sharing in the condemnation and travail of the Lord. In verses 66-71, we see this drama play out. The third time he denied Jesus is interestingly grave. Verse 70, 71 of our text puts it thus: “…. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely, thou art one of them: for thou art a Galilean, and thy speech agreeth thereto. But he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not this man of whom ye speak” (KJV).
Peter believed in Jesus as the Lord and Saviour of the World. But in his tempting hour, he failed to be strong in his faith. He denied his Lord. Many of us do the same; we deny God, Lord Jesus, and the Holy Spirit through our works – our lifestyle and not standing firm in defence of the principles of Christ and the gospel. We fall easily; and in the process, we give Satan the opportunity to mock our God because we have denied Him by the things we have done.
A careful Christian is one who takes time to reconsider his actions and match them with the word of God. Let us be careful here. But if we fall, let us repent sincerely and weep over our sin or wrong doing like Peter. God would see it and forgive us abundantly.
- Do you still feel ashamed or too big to own up your errors and confess them?
- Father, give me a humble, broken, and contrite spirit.
