Rotimi Amaechi, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, has said the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, will restore electricity subsidies if elected president.
Amaechi made the promise on Thursday while visiting wards across Omuma Local Government Area of Rivers State, where he canvassed support for Atiku and delivered the former vice-president’s campaign message.
He criticised the Bola Tinubu administration’s electricity subsidy policy, claiming that the removal of the subsidy had resulted in a sharp increase in electricity bills for Nigerians.
According to Amaechi, Atiku would reintroduce the subsidy and scrap the current electricity band classification if elected.
Amaechi said his household electricity bill, which he claimed was previously about N500,000, had risen to approximately N4 million following the policy change.
He also linked the rising cost of transportation and food to the removal of the petrol subsidy, arguing that Nigerians were bearing the brunt of the government’s policies.
