MEMORY VERSE: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. And the earth was without form and void. And darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved over the face of the waters.” Genesis 1:1-2 IKJV
TEXT: GENESIS 1:1-10
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.
6 Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” 7 Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. 8 And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day.
9 Then God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was so. 10 And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters He called Seas. And God saw that it was good.

One difficulty ordinary minds and science have faced over the ages is to understand how creation actually took place. However, amidst this muddle, the Bible Book of Hebrews 11:3 informs us that creation took place by bringing something into existence, which previously did not exist. Moreover, the Bible goes ahead to notify us that Jesus Christ stands as an indisputable creation authority, and that He was part of the Godhead who created all things (Genesis 1:1-27, Matthew 19:4). In other words, the Incarnate Word was in the beginning when all things were created, and He was the one who did the creating, (John 1:1; Colossians 1:16, Psalms 104:24, Proverbs 3:19).
Creation is the work of God when, in the beginning, He made all things out of nothing through Christ. The created world reveals God’s glory, power, divine nature, and wisdom. So, no one has an excuse for not knowing or honouring God. While all Christians believe and affirm that God created the world, there are different opinions on both the age of the earth, and the process of how things developed to what they are today. Some argue that God created the world in six literal days, about six thousand years ago. Some others believe that the days of Genesis 1, are, or represent longer periods of time, thereby allowing for gradual changes and development within various species – including mankind. Some Bible scholars stand somewhere in between these two extremes.
Though God’s good creation has been distorted by the introduction of sin, He has not lost total control. He has firmly promised the redemption of His material creation in the New Heaven and the New Earth. Genesis is the Book of all beginnings. It reports the beginning of creation, humanity, marriage, etc. It is also the beginning of the Good News of redemption (Genesis 3:15). If we really must know our origins, the Book of Genesis is where to go.
Reflections
- All things were made by the Incarnate Son, and without Him was not anything made.
Prayer
- Lord God Almighty, you are the Sole Creator and Grand Commander of the universe.
