The Mayor of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, Sir Allwell Ihunda, has awarded education grants to 450 undergraduates and postgraduate students as part of activities marking his first anniversary in office.
The beneficiaries include 400 undergraduates who will receive ₦200,000 each and 50 postgraduate students who will receive ₦300,000 each.
Ihunda, who presented the grants on Friday, urged the beneficiaries to judiciously use the funds to support their academic pursuits and achieve their educational goals.
He also commissioned six 500KVA electricity transformers for deployment to beneficiary communities, saying the intervention was aimed at addressing persistent power challenges.
“We cannot allow our people to suffer all the time, sitting in darkness because of transformer issues; while this is primarily the duty of PHED, we have procured these units and arranged for their professional installation to ensure our communities finally get light,” he stated.
The Mayor said the interventions were part of his administration’s broader programmes, including drainage desilting, school rehabilitation, free medical outreach and empowerment initiatives.
Special Guest of Honour, Chief Lasbery Amadi, commended Ihunda for what he described as purposeful leadership and grassroots development, noting that improved electricity would benefit students, businesses and security.
Also speaking, Eze Rt. Hon. Ken Chikere, Eze Orieku Kpunwo VI, applauded the administration for implementing projects with direct impact on residents.
The event marked the end of a four-day project commissioning programme commemorating Ihunda’s first anniversary as Mayor of Port Harcourt City Local Government.
