ESOCS Devotional 15 December
TEXT: 1 JOHN 5:14-21
MEMORY VERSE: “But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name.” John 1:12 NKJV
Some person’s faith is still shakeable as to the complete assurance of salvation. However, this is baseless because assurance of salvation is the whole essence of the Bible. This assurance is rooted in the eternal love of God who chose us as His own, and holds us in His hand, that nothing can tear us away from His love. We can know that we have eternal life through Jesus Christ – not because of what we have done, but because of what our Great Father in heaven has done (John 3:16).
If we want to have life in the fullest sense of the word, we must entertain absolute belief in Jesus Christ. For if we believe in the Son of God, who is the word of life, and we live in love, then we receive life (John 1:12). God is the source of all life, and when we believe in Jesus His Son, who laid down his life for us, (John 15:13), we can then be assured that we have eternal life.
John also insists that believers should continue in the life of obedience in order to maintain their hope of eternal life, while still dwelling in this physical realm. Also, in order to enjoy abundance here on planet earth, John in this text (vs. 14-15), gives two conditions upon which prayers are answered: (1) We must ask according to the will of God, for God does not work contrary to His will in answer to prayers (1 John 3:22). (2) We must ask upon the condition that we are obedient to His will, for God works through the lives of those who are carrying out His instructions on earth (Mark 11:24; John 14:13; John 15:17).
