Argentina football legend Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 39, bringing an end to his illustrious career with the national team.
Messi made the announcement on Monday, August 31, 2026, saying the decision was painful but that he believed it was the right time to step away.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner made his senior debut for Argentina in 2005 and went on to become the country’s most-capped player and all-time leading scorer, recording 207 appearances and 125 goals.
His international career reached its peak in 2022 when he captained Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar, four years after leading the team to the 2014 World Cup final.
Messi also won two Copa América titles with Argentina, in 2021 and 2024, as well as the 2022 Finalissima.
His final major tournament appearance came at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Argentina reached the final but lost 1-0 to Spain after extra time.
In announcing his retirement, Messi said he had given everything to the national team and felt it was time for younger players to take their opportunity.
The Argentine superstar, who currently plays for Inter Miami, will continue his club career after ending one of the most decorated international careers in football history.
