Former Bayelsa State Governor, Timipre Sylva, has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) with immediate effect.
Sylva announced his resignation in a letter dated August 31, 2026, addressed to the APC Chairman of Ward 4 in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The former governor, who described himself as a founding member of the APC, said he was saddened by what he described as the abandonment of the ideals upon which the party was founded.
He accused the party’s leaders of operating on the belief that “all is fair in politics,” arguing that such a mentality violated basic standards of decency and morality.
According to him, the APC-led Federal Government has disappointed the majority of Nigerians, adding that he could see neither a credible attempt nor the possibility of revamping the administration.
Sylva said he was therefore left with no option but to “jettison a foundering ship,” expressing confidence that Nigerians would vote for the country in the coming election and free it from what he described as the government’s “stranglehold.”
The former governor also copied the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the resignation letter, accusing the anti-graft agency of recently conducting itself more like an organ of the APC than an institution of the state.
He acknowledged that his decision could expose him and his associates to what he called a renewed “witch-hunt,” but said he was willing to take the risk.
