Two persons are feared dead after a violent communal clash erupted in Rumuodogo community, in the Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State on Sunday night.
According to eyewitnesses, more than 20 armed men stormed the Rumuodogo 2 area, where they allegedly attacked residents, set several houses ablaze and carted away valuables. The assailants were reportedly attempting to forcefully take over land belonging to the community.
Residents also claimed that gunfire echoed across the area for about three hours, forcing many people to flee for safety. One eyewitness said his home and personal belongings were destroyed in the fire, adding that he narrowly escaped with his wife.
The Chairman of the Community Development Committee of Olua Rumuodogo 2, Sunny Beke, confirmed that the attack took place.
Meanwhile, there are unverified reports suggesting that some members of the Rumuodogo community may be planning a reprisal attack. However, the claims have not been independently confirmed.
As of the time of filing this report, the Rivers State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the incident.
