The Rivers Restoration Movement (RRM) has called on security agencies to arrest individuals making statements that could incite violence or threaten Nigeria’s economy. The group made this demand after extensive deliberations with respected Ijaw leaders, expressing deep concern over recent remarks attributed to the President of the Ijaw National Congress (INC), Prof. Benjamin Okaba, as well as Chief Sara Igbe, Alhaji Asari Dokubo, and some Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) leaders.
Speaking to journalists, RRM Secretary Mrs. Sarima Akpata described the statements as “reckless, thoughtless, and provocative,” warning that such rhetoric poses a serious threat to national security and peaceful coexistence.
She said, as a group committed to peace, justice, and a united Nigeria, they believe no individual or organization has a monopoly on violence. She urged security agencies to take immediate action against anyone or any group attempting to destabilize the country, its economy, or its people as “Enough is enough.”
The group questioned whether those advocating economic sabotage speak for the entire Ijaw community, pointing out that nine Ijaw lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly have faced mistreatment and denial of their allowances for over a year under Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s administration, despite no court declaring their seats vacant.
RRM reaffirmed that Nigeria operates under a constitutional democracy guided by the rule of law, emphasizing that the Supreme Court’s ruling must be upheld. The group urged the public to ignore what they described as “empty, outdated threats,” stressing that the laws of Nigeria remain supreme.
