The Rivers State Government has distributed science materials and equipment to senior secondary schools across the state ahead of the forthcoming West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony held at the premises of the Rivers State Senior Secondary Schools Board on Monday, the Commissioner for Education, Peters Nwagor, described the exercise as a demonstration of the commitment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara to improving quality education in the state.
Nwagor said the science materials were approved and provided by the state government to strengthen the teaching and learning of science subjects in schools, noting that science education remains critical to technological advancement, innovation and national development.
According to him, no society can compete globally without deliberate investment in science and technology. He commended Governor Fubara for prioritising the education sector through the provision of tools aimed at enhancing practical learning and academic excellence among students.
The commissioner charged principals to ensure the materials are properly utilised for practical teaching and learning, warning that any school administrator found diverting, hoarding or selling the items would face disciplinary action in line with public service regulations.
He also warned against examination malpractice, stressing that principals found aiding or encouraging such acts would be sanctioned.
“We must collectively restore the dignity and credibility of our educational system,” he said.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Rivers State Senior Secondary Schools Board, Tony Egwurugwu, urged principals to make judicious use of the materials for the benefit of students.
