The Rivers State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has insisted that no individual has the power to determine who emerges as the next governor of the state, stressing that the decision rests solely with the electorate.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the party’s Publicity Secretary and Spokesperson, Barr. Chizy Enyi, the ADC described as disturbing reports suggesting that the political future of Rivers State could be dictated by the preference of a single individual.
The party maintained that Rivers State is not the personal estate of any political figure and that the constitutional right to choose a governor belongs exclusively to the people through free, fair and credible elections.
According to the ADC, the era of imposing governors on Rivers people has come to an end, particularly with what it described as the growing popularity of the party in the state. It warned that any attempt to manipulate future elections or subvert the will of the electorate would be resisted by Rivers people.
The party also criticised what it called the politics of godfatherism, arguing that portraying the governorship as a personal gift to be bestowed by any political leader undermines democracy and disrespects the sovereignty of the electorate.
As preparations gather momentum for the 2027 general elections, the ADC urged political stakeholders to embrace issue-based campaigns centred on competence, integrity and vision instead of intimidation, entitlement and personality cults.
The party further encouraged eligible voters not to be swayed by political propaganda or endorsements, insisting that every vote carries equal value and that only the ballot—not the influence of any individual—will determine who occupies the Rivers State Government House.
Reaffirming its commitment to democratic principles, the ADC pledged to continue advocating for transparent elections, accountable leadership and a government that derives its legitimacy from the freely expressed will of Rivers people.
