The Nigeria Emergency Management Agency, NEMA has said that there are about 16 out of the 23 Local government areas in Rivers State where flooding may cause damage.
The Agency which made this known through its South-South Zonal Head, Walson Ibarakumo,in a chat with journalists said, 16 Local government areas in the state will experience flooding. This is due to the incessant rainfalls.
He said, based on the annual flood outlook 2020, the highly probable flood risk areas are Degema, Asari-Toru and Akuku-Toru. The probable flood risk areas are; Ahaoda-East, Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni, Oyigbo, Andoni, Etche, Ogu-Bolo, Ahaoda-West, Port Harcourt, Obio-Akpor, Gokana, Tai, Khana and Okrika Local governments.
Ibarakumo called on authorities of the above listed areas to put measures in place in order to manage the situation if the need arises.
Walson also stated that the NEMA has started sensitising members of those communities and mapping higher grounds so that when the flood come they will not be overwhelmed.
