Media personality, Joshua Nte Rogers has questioned the quality of road construction and supervision in Rivers State, expressing concern over the rapid deterioration of roads reconstructed in recent years.
Rogers, who raised the concerns over the condition of roads across Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor metropolis, also pointed to signs of deterioration on some newly constructed flyovers, including damaged expansion joints.
He questioned why roads reconstructed only a few years ago were already in poor condition, while some roads built during the administration of former Governor Rotimi Amaechi appeared to remain more motorable.
“This raises serious questions about the quality of materials, construction standards, supervision and maintenance of more recent projects,” Rogers said.
He argued that the repeated reconstruction of roads within a short period placed an unnecessary burden on public resources, stressing that successive administrations should focus on expanding the road network and providing infrastructure to underserved communities.
“This is not how a society develops,” he said, calling on the government to demonstrate greater sincerity and accountability in the execution of public projects.
According to him, road construction should be aimed at delivering durable infrastructure that serves residents for years, rather than forcing subsequent administrations to spend scarce resources rebuilding roads that should have lasted longer.
“Road construction should be an investment in the future, not a recurring expense caused by poor workmanship or inadequate supervision,” Rogers added.
He maintained that new administrations should prioritise opening up new communities and extending the road network instead of repeatedly reconstructing roads that ought to have remained in good condition.
