The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde has called on the Federal Government to stop misleading Nigerians on the issue of State Police, insisting that states can establish their own policing structures through legislative backing.
Speaking at a public gathering in a viral video, Makinde said insecurity remained a key focus of his administration and recalled that there was no Amotekun Corps in Oyo State before he assumed office.
According to him, governors in the Southwest only created the Amotekun security outfit after efforts to establish State Police failed.
“We wanted State Police, but because we could not achieve it, we introduced Amotekun as a temporary solution. They should stop wasting Nigerians’ time,” the governor said.
Makinde added that states have the power to establish State Police with the support of their respective Houses of Assembly, rather than relying solely on the Federal Government and the Nigeria Police Force.
The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tackling insecurity and expressed confidence that abducted schoolchildren in Oyo State would be rescued safely.
