Three leaders of the Ndi Igbo community in Rivers State have sued the police at the High Court in Port Harcourt over alleged harassment, intimidation and attempts to arrest them in connection with their political alignment with Rt. Hon. O.K. Chinda and a chieftaincy coronation.
The applicants are Eze, Sir, Engr. Samm Nwokolo, Dr. Igwe Esonu and Chief Emmanuel Anya.
In the suit, marked PHC/3451/FHR/2026, the applicants alleged that they were harassed, intimidated and subjected to attempts at arrest and detention over the Ndi Igbo community’s endorsement/alignment with O.K. Chinda, as well as the chieftaincy coronation of the second applicant by the first applicant.
They maintained that the matter was purely civil and did not involve any criminal offence warranting police intervention.
The applicants are seeking declarations that the alleged actions of the police violated their fundamental rights under the 1999 Constitution, as amended, and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
They are also asking the court to affirm the right of members of the Ndi Igbo community in Rivers State to freely assemble, associate with others and belong to any political party of their choice.
The applicants further want the court to restrain the respondents from arresting, detaining or harassing them over their political alignment and the chieftaincy coronation.
They are also demanding ₦10 million in general damages.
The respondents listed in the suit are the Nigeria Police Force, Inspector-General of Police, Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, SP Emmanuel Agbozenaor Ipo of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, and Prince Ifeanyi Ejims.
