The Federal Government of Nigeria, has threatened to stop the salaries of Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), if they continue their indefinite strike action.
Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige disclosed this during a meeting with the unions, yesterday in Abuja.
He stated that the government might be forced to invoke Section 43 of the Trade Dispute Act 2004 and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) statutes which permits it to stop the salaries of workers when they are on strike.
He berated the unions for embarking on a strike after asking for an adjournment, which was granted.
He noted that the action of the union is not in conformity with the Trade Dispute norms.
“You asked for an adjournment, we gave an adjournment and you used the period of adjournment to go on full blown strike. That is not right. It is not social dialoguing.
“It is against ILO statutes. The ILO statute says you have a right to go on strike and your employer has a right not to pay you and use the same money to keep the enterprise going.
