The Chairman of Emohua Local Government Area, Sir Chidi Lloyd, has visited the family of Hon. Princewill Obodo, Rivers-East Senatorial Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), following the death of his 22-year-old son, Anthony Obodo.
Anthony was reportedly shot dead along the AGIP-Rumueme axis of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area by a police officer attached to the Rumueme/AGIP Estate Police Station.
During his visit to the bereaved family at their AGIP Estate residence in Port Harcourt on Saturday, Lloyd condemned the killing, describing it as a tragic incident and a major loss to the Obodo family and the people of Rundele Ward 7 in Emohua LGA.
The council chairman expressed confidence in the leadership of the Rivers State Police Command to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that due process and the law are followed.
According to the deceased’s father, Anthony was a young graduate awaiting his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) call-up letter.
He alleged that Anthony was driving alone along the AGIP Road when a team of police officers chased his vehicle. He claimed that one of the officers shot at the vehicle’s tyre, causing it to lose control and veer off the road before hitting pedestrians.
The grieving father maintained that his son was not a criminal suspect and questioned why he was allegedly shot by the police.
He called for a thorough investigation into the incident and urged authorities to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
Princewill Obodo thanked Lloyd for visiting and expressing solidarity with the family during their period of mourning.
