The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has disclosed that the FCT Administration is considering industrial waste recycling as part of efforts to maintain a cleaner and more sustainable Abuja.
Wike made the disclosure on Friday while inspecting ongoing projects across the nation’s capital.
Speaking after the inspection, the minister said the traditional monthly environmental sanitation exercise is no longer enough to meet the demands of a modern city, stressing that waste management should go beyond routine clean-up activities.
According to him, the popular “Sanitation Saturday” only offers temporary results without addressing the larger challenge of waste generation and disposal.
He explained that the FCTA plans to move away from reliance on dump sites and landfills by establishing recycling factories capable of converting waste into useful products in line with global best practices.
Wike noted that the administration is already reviewing proposals from experts with experience in modern waste recycling systems implemented in other cities around the world.
The minister emphasized that waste management should be treated as an industrial process rather than merely refuse collection, adding that the goal is to adopt modern technologies that can sustainably process waste.
He also provided updates on key infrastructure projects expected to be inaugurated during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s third year in office.
Wike expressed satisfaction with the Judges’ Quarters project handled by Gilmor, describing it as nearly completed and “99 per cent ready.” He further confirmed that the N5 road project has been fully completed.
