ESOCS Devotional 5 June 2026 – Write It Down
MEMORY VERSE: “Thus speaketh the LORD God of Israel, saying, Write thee all the words that I have spoken unto thee in a book” Jeremiah 30:2.
TEXT: JEREMIAH 30:1-9
The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying, 2 “Thus speaks the Lord God of Israel, saying: ‘Write in a book for yourself all the words that I have spoken to you. 3 For behold, the days are coming,’ says the Lord, ‘that I will bring back from captivity My people Israel and Judah,’ says the Lord. ‘And I will cause them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it.’ ”
4 Now these are the words that the Lord spoke concerning Israel and Judah.
5 “For thus says the Lord:
‘We have heard a voice of trembling,
Of fear, and not of peace.
6 Ask now, and see,
Whether a man is ever in labor with child?
So why do I see every man with his hands on his loins
Like a woman in labor,
And all faces turned pale?
7 Alas! For that day is great,
So that none is like it;
And it is the time of Jacob’s trouble,
But he shall be saved out of it.
8 ‘For it shall come to pass in that day,’
Says the Lord of hosts,
‘That I will break his yoke from your neck,
And will burst your bonds;
Foreigners shall no more enslave them.
9 But they shall serve the Lord their God,
And David their king,
Whom I will raise up for them.

Written documents last for centuries. They are solid proof of evidence when issues become controversial. They become reference points. They are intact at all times; and they are invariable across ages. They are good avenues for transmitting knowledge and wisdom down generational lines.
Surely, this understanding made God instruct Prophet Jeremiah to write down the words He was speaking to him, as evident in our text. Several other prophets at various times had received such instructions. Some other times God had to write it down Himself, as in the case of Mount Horeb. Here are some of the categories of what we should write down:
Prophecy: God reveals His mind and future events using prophecy. Prophecy sustains faith, hope, exhorts the people, and is for admonition, caution, direction, correction, and general instruction on the ways of God. People who obey divine prophecy do not experience calamity.
Sermon: God uses the sermon as an important tool to relate His word, ways and will. The preacher has a responsibility to write down his sermon; it makes for more organization, sequence, and better delivery.
Songs and Books: Songwriters receive songs and their lyrics in the dream or vision. Some come through the inspiration of God. They may be lost unless the songwriters write them down or record them in audio form.
Authors equally receive inspiration to write books. An author needs to carry an jotter averywhere to write things down whenever and whenever the inspiration comes; otherwise, he may forget them or lose salient points of the inspiration. Generations need to read books. Write down your inspirations any time you receive them – this is very essential.
Instructions: Every instruction received from God should be written down for reference purposes and as good reminder lest we forget them. Have a book dedicated to instructions. In the overall, things written down are hardly lost over time.
Reflections
- Get things written down. The brain is not reliable enough to retain information for a long time.
Prayer
- Father, we thank you for always speaking to us.
- Forgive our poor attitude of record keeping. Grant us grace to become good recorders.
