ESOCS Devotional 28 May 2026 – Jesus: The Saviour of Mankind
MEMORY VERSE: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 KJV
TEXT: JOHN 3:16-21
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”

Jesus offered mankind the waters of life. He brought to humanity, the bread of life, as well as the light of life. He came to give those who follow Him full, rich, joyful lives, (John 10:10b). He also admonished those who rejected Him, to accept that life that lasts unto eternity, without regrets. He is the only way to the Father. He is the way, the truth, and the life. No man can access the Father, except through Him (John 14:6). We come to the Father through Jesus Christ, in order to obtain God’s grace-filled gift of eternal life.
In our text, Jesus announces the result of God’s grace for all mankind. When Jesus is lifted up, all those who believe in Him will not perish. Just as the Jews obediently looked on the serpent that Moses lifted up in the wilderness, and were healed, (Numbers 21:9). In likewise manner, those who obediently look unto Jesus will be spiritually healed.
God’s action toward man was the result of love (Romans 5:8-9; Ephesians 2:4, 2 Thessalonians 2:16). It follows therefore that, we love Him because He first loved us (1 John 4:19). However, there is a condition attached to this seemingly free gift. Yes, one must believe in the Son of God, to be salvaged. But, it is not just exercising a simple belief. God’s grace on the cross through His Son must stimulate an obedient faith response (2 Corinthians 4:15). The faith response is the condition, for without faith, it is impossible to please God, which faith response must be accompanied with corresponding works, (Hebrews 11:6, James 2:17-26).
It therefore means that, those who do not respond to God’s grace by obedient faith, will perish from God’s presence (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9). But those who do believe and respond accordingly, will have life – even eternal life. Moreover, faith, no matter how strong, must have corresponding good works. Let’s take heed to ourselves.
Reflections
- Only those who receive Him with obedient faith, will have life eternal.
Prayer
- Lord Jesus, give me the grace to follow.
